My journey as a Graphic Designer pt 5

Flash forward to fall of 2018; With the crisp autumn breeze blowing through the air a bit too soon, it was only a painful reminder for us second-years that time was of the essence and it wouldn’t be long until we’d be madly seeking out internships for the spring.

Semester 3 was informative and immersed us in a world we of designers had been avoiding for some time now: the business side of the industry.

With classes like marketing strategies, entrepreneurship and even survey of advertising, things were really put into perspective in where we stood as designers in this industry. Were these classes boring? Sometimes. Did I just draw in my notebook for eighty percent of my time there? Undoubtedly.

But even if these were some unfavorable classes for students who were always feeling the need to be creative, they were useful. Nothing lasts forever and this wasn’t any exception.

My final semester so far has been what I consider my best semester yet. With great classes, great classmates, it feels relaxing in some ways but still nerve-wracking once the term ‘internship” is mentioned. I’m sure everything will fall into place soon enough though.

And just like that, the fall of 2017 is here and I’m now a student enrolled in Humber’s Advertising and Graphic Design program. This is it guys!

The first semester was enriching and might’ve dragged on longer than it should’ve (perhaps it was due to the infamous college strike…?) But anyways, I was learning a lot and I was finally learning how to design and use programs like Illustrator and Indesign properly.

There was so much to learn in so little time. It felt motivating but also intimidating. The program was abundant in projects and knowledge regarding not only the design world, but the other worlds design would ultimately have to work in conjunction with. Such as media studies, marketing, project management and so forth. It was all so interesting knowing that graphic design was so much more than I believed it to be. It was inspiring and invigorating. It was immersive and being here made me feel a sense of belonging I hadn’t experienced in years.

We’re now in the year 2016! (Woot, the world’s problem year!) Life is looking pretty good, I’m in my course working towards my dream, I’m (kinda) becoming social again, I’m having a pretty good time!

Until, oh, I discover I’m really bad at interior design and industrial design. That’s…that’s just fantastic.

If this year long program taught me anything it’s A) Never ever ever take an 8:00am class and B) Graphic design is the way to go for me.

This design program was supposed to give students a feel for the three major design disciplines, Graphic Design, Interior Design, and Industrial Design, but it was soon obvious the program was geared towards mostly to Interior and Industrial Design. Which is totally fine! I get that those are tough programs to get accepted into.

But anyways, the year of my Design Foundations course was intriguing. I met interesting people, finally discovered for myself what college was like and got accepted into the Advertising and Graphic Design program by the end of the school year.

My journey as a Graphic Designer pt 2

The year is 2015, the province I’m in is Ontario and I’m straight outta Manitoba. My family and I jut moved to this exhilarating province, the land of milk bags (Do you guys know how bad that sounds out of context). It was weird for the first while and during the school year of 2015-2016, I took a gap year.

My gap year was, also weird. I was constantly in and out of a job for a period of ten months, I was less talkative but one upside was I now had a drawing tablet in my possession. I learned the skills of the trade during the this year and forced myself to draw with it, knowing I’d benefit from this skill.

I applied to quite a few different programs during this year as well. I applied to graphic design programs, animation programs and even journalism programs (yep that writer within me refused to die).

But, once June of 2016 rolled around and Humber offered me an admission to their Design Foundations program in the place of a Graphic Design admission. I took the course and…let’s just say, I had an interesting time during the next year to come.

My journey as a Graphic Designer

It all started when I was in high-school. I think.

During my high-school years, I found myself becoming very fond of designing in my Graphics class. As a child, the dream was to become a writer but the need to continue creating and designing became stronger as the years went by.

My Graphics class was interesting, everything about it never failed to excite me and have me anticipate the next class. Lots of different things were taught during this class, things that were both practical for the field and crucial to grow as a designer.

This class was fun but it had it’s frustrating moments, whether it was disputes with classmates or files that would corrupt on me (High-school me + videos were a recipe for disaster) But nonetheless, it was an experience that made me appreciate the world around us and all the design this world has to offer.

But of course, all good things must come to an end and before I knew it, high-school was over. What awaited me in college? Well, you’ll find out soon enough.
